The Old Library, formerly the Royal Library, was built in the Baroque style between 1775 and 1780 by order of Frederick the Great, based on plans by Georg Christian Unger. It has served as a university building since 1910. It was destroyed in World War II. Reconstruction took place from 1963 to 1969. Since then, it has housed the library of the Faculty of Law at Humboldt University. The building is also popularly known as the "Commode."
