THE PFISTER HOUSE, Colmar
This bourgeois house was built in 1537 by the hatter Louis Scherer, who came from Besançon and had become wealthy through the operation of silver mines in the Val de Lièpvre. Although it dates from the Renaissance period, it is still strongly influenced by medieval architecture. The pictorial design, which combines allegories and figures from the Old and New Testaments with imperial portraits, clearly demonstrates the affinity of wealthy merchants for the humanist culture of the Renaissance.

The Pfister house was built in 1537 for the hatter Ludwig Scherer, who made his fortune with money trading in the Val de Liepvre. Despite its medieval features, the house is the first example of architectural renaissance in Colmar. With its two-storey corner oriel, its wood gallery, its octagonal turret and its mural paintings which represent biblical and secular scenes, the Pfister house became one of the symbols of the old Colmar. It owns its name to the family who restored it and lived there from 1841 to 1892.

Despite its features, it is the first example of Renaissance architecture in Colmar. With its two-storey bay window, its wooden gallery, its octagonal turret and its murals depicting biblical and secular scenes, the Pfister House has become one of the symbols of old Colmar. It owes its thanks to the family who restored and inhabited it from 1841 to 1892.
The facade and roof of this building were restored in 2012.
