    THE FISHMONGER'S DISTRICT, Colmar

The fishmonger's district is where most of Colmar's professional fishermen and boatmen lived. They were part of a powerful corporation. The fish caught were stored in fish ponds or sold in the fishmonger's district. In 1706, a huge fire destroyed more than forty houses in the district. From 1978 to 1981, major renovation work made it possible to restore many of the half-timbered houses in this district, which lies between the Tanneurs district and the picturesque Little Venice.

The market hall is also located here, and a visit is an absolute must.

One of the most beautiful districts in the Alsatian city of Colmar is the Quartier de la Poissonnerie (Fish Market Quarter), through which the Lauch river flows.

In the Middle Ages, fishermen and boatmen lived and worked here. The fish that were caught in the rivers around Colmar were delivered here via the Lauch river. Here in the fish market quarter, they were then resold on the market or processed in the local fish factories.

The district acquired its current appearance with the beautiful, colorful half-timbered houses between 1978 and 1981. During this time, the entire district was fundamentally restored and the half-timbering exposed. The Quartier de la Poissonnerie thus blends harmoniously with the other picturesque districts such as the Quartier des Tanneurs (Tanners' Quarter) and the Petite Venise (Little Vendig).
