Holtenau Lock

Unlike other locks, the Holtenauer locks do not secure any existing water level differences, but they prevent the current.

In contrast to the New Holtenau Locks, which are closed by sliding gates, the lock chambers of the old locks are closed at the end by so-called "stemmpaar gates".
It is interesting how little mechanical power is needed to move the heavy gates. From 1973 to 1975, the old locks were completely renovated. Even in the first years of the 21st century, the Old Locks had hardly lost any of their importance, because despite the increasingly frequent accidents at the New Locks, it was still possible to lock at least ships up to a certain size through.
