Kreka was in the past larger than Tuzla. It had two railway stations. It was a beautiful and well-maintained settlement of colonists. It had flower gardens, gardens, developed sports, rich culture and entertainment, and Kreka was known more than neighboring Tuzla. With the arrival of Austria-Hungary, mining and industry developed. Skilled workers from other parts of Austria-Hungary moved in: Italians, Slovenes, Russians, Czechs, Slovaks, Austrians, Jews, Hungarians, Germans, Ukrainians and others. 27 nations lived in Kreka. Kreka and Tuzla became a symbol of togetherness and human tolerance. Dozens of workers' apartments (two under one roof) were built in Kreka for the first settlers in the so-called 'Donja kolona' (present-day Ulica Mitra Trifunovića Uče) and 'Gornja kolona' (Ulica Husinskih rudara). In the center of this workers' settlement was the Workers' Home.
