In the courthouse of Marmagen, the lay judges for the criminal court met from 1315. In 1356 there was a legal dispute between the Duke of Jülich and the Archbishop of Cologne over a gallows erected in Marmagen. It is assumed that this gallows stood here on the Galgenberg.
