The approach is a bit tedious, but it's worth it. The Steinfeld Monastery, with its basilica, is one of the most important medieval architectural monuments in the Rhineland. The monastery café and a small monastery shop invite you to pause and browse.

Kloster Steinfeld in the Eifel is a former Premonstratensian abbey with an important basilica from the early 12th century. Visible from afar on a hill in the south of the North Rhine-Westphalian municipality Kall, the "Eifelkloster" with few surrounding houses forms the district Steinfeld.

Since 1923, the monastery has been owned by the Salvatorian Order, which maintains the Hermann-Josef-Kolleg Steinfeld, a grammar school, the private art academy Kloster Steinfeld and the Franziskus-Jordan-Gästehaus in Steinfeld. After the Order wanted to close the boarding school already at the end of the school year 2011/2012, this could be averted by a parents' initiative. But the remaining 15 students were not enough, and the boarding school was finally closed at the end of the 2012/2013 school year.

An impressive church. And when I was there, someone played on the organ, which is considered one of the most important of the Eifel.

Do not forget the apple for the Appel Jupp :-) From the lexicon: Hermann-Joseph was buried in Steinfeld. Shortly after his death he was worshiped in the Eifel by the population. He is according to the legend of the apple accepting the apple as an apple saint - in the Rhenish dialect: Appel-Jupp -: again and again pilgrims put fresh apples on his grave. In the Baroque his worship boomed; since 1701 his sarcophagus is in the basilica of the monastery Steinfeld. Relics were widely used. A climax experienced his cult in the romance, where he became a saint.

The Steinfeld Monastery is an impressive facility. Overnight stays are highly recommended and you can stop off at the monastery café and in the old abbey opposite - there is also a delicious monastery beer. Every Sunday at 2 p.m. there are public tours through the monastery basilica.
