The Standing Girl (bronze) was erected in 1961 and is owned by the Odense City Art Foundation.
The artist's main motif was the naked, voluptuous, and powerful female body,
a motif he returned to repeatedly. Gerhard Henning lived from 1880 to 1967.
"They say my girls have legs that are too fat. That may be so, but I like it that way.
They hold them so well." This is what Gerhard Henning said when someone criticized his female sculptures for not conforming to contemporary feminine ideals.
Gerhard Henning was an apprentice painter in Copenhagen and continued his training
in drawing and painting in his native Sweden. He was self-taught as a sculptor.
