The petrified tree is right next to the bridge over the Eger. The tree trunk was found near Loket in a coal mine. It is a fossil deciduous tree from the forest that covered the landscape here about 21 million years ago. The forest was ignited by a volcanic eruption, destroyed by fire and buried under ash and lava. The petrification process took place underground with a lack of oxygen.

In 2010, participants of the 14th year of the international art workshop Plenair Loket created a herd of goats out of wood. Inspiration came from a herd of goats on the slope below the castle.

The name petrified wood is self-explanatory - wood that has been transformed into a stone fossil over millions of years and in which the wooden structure is still recognizable, or in the words of the chemist and mineralogist Johann Gottschalk Wallerius (1709 to 1785): Petrificata vegetabilia arborum" - "are perfect pieces of wood, turned to stone, from different trees".
