As early as the 13th century, the order of the Crusaders with the Red Star had a church built in the city center below Elbogen Castle. The patronage was bestowed on the Order by the Bohemian King Wenceslaus I. In 1248, Pope Innocent IV confirmed this donation. In 1473 it burned down. Nikolaus Schlick had it rebuilt in the Gothic style in 1490 and set up a family crypt. In 1521, the Reformation, promoted by the Counts of Schlick, found its way into Elbogen. The church initially remained Catholic.
