Located at the Cranzahl reservoir, it is great for a hike on the way to the Bärenstein

The Cranzahl dam is located at the foot of the Bärenstein.

The construction of the Cranzahl dam began in 1949. It is a product of the early years of the GDR and one of two dam projects in the still young state. Just like the second project, the Sosa dam, the party and state leadership trusted in the commitment of the youth organization FDJ and entrusted it with the construction work. This gave the project the name «dam of friendship». The construction work was completed in just three years. The dam has a dam that was heaped up from earth and has a clay apron as an internal seal.

It is fed by the Lampertsbach and the Moritzbach. Both bodies of water unite just before the dam inflow into the Lampertsbach. In addition, the "Hanggraben" more than seven kilometers long serves to supply additional water to the dam. This takes water from the Sehma, whose source is in the Fichtelberg, and also feeds it to the Lampertsbach. The approximately 28-hectare reservoir provides raw water for the drinking water supply of the towns of Annaberg-Buchholz, Oberwiesenthal and the surrounding area. The dam also serves to protect against flooding.
