The city is located in western Bohemia in the Bohemian part of the Ore Mountains at 760 m. The location borders in the west directly on the neighboring Bärenstein in Saxony. The Pöhlbach (Czech: Polava), which forms the state border between the Czech Republic and Germany, runs between the two places. Both places are at the foot of the Bärenstein basalt table mountain.
