Doña Elvira was the daughter of the Chancellor of Castile, Don Pero López de Ayala, servant and chronicler of King Pedro I and his three immediate successors. After the bloody attack on Seville's Jewish Quarter in 1391, Elvira inherited a large part of the present-day Santa Cruz neighborhood from her father, including a space that would later become the site of a comedy theater. It was there that Lope de Rueda began his career as an actor and playwright, and Miguel de Cervantes himself premiered several of his famous creations.
