St. Peter's Church in Rieseby is the oldest building in Rieseby. The church is a late Romanesque brick church and one of the most beautiful country churches in our region, even in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The church was built around 1220, at that time as a single-nave brick building next to a Bronze Age burial mound. Today, as I said, it is an eye-catcher and a tourist destination worth seeing in our region. Externally, it is modeled on the Ratzeburg Cathedral.

The church was expanded in 1673 with the addition of a crypt and in 1702 with a church tower. The crypt was built for the noble family Wonsfleth, the church tower was built on a Bronze Age tumulus. Inside the church, the vault was added later and painted in colour. It's now completely whitewashed. In 1913 there was a major renovation of the church. For this purpose, almost faded representations were renewed in color, which gave the church a new look in the interior. The colored stained glass windows were also renewed at the same time.

Worth seeing inside is the granite baptismal font from the 12th century, which is also the oldest object. The christening cover dates from 1649 and was donated by the von Ahlefeldt family (Gut Saxtorf). The same applies to the pulpit from the same year. The altar was donated by Burchard von Ahlefeldt in 1669. The Danish organ by Marcussen & Søn dates from 1887 and was completely overhauled in 1992.

The roof of the tower was renovated in May 2021. The DD/H (The roofing trade) 1.2022 states that it is crooked but firm. The tower was covered with approx. 24,900 oak shingles

Unfortunately the church was closed, which was a shame. But we looked at the interesting graves around it and were pleased with the flowers planted on the tower.
