These are the remains of the German trenches. Not from the First World War, but from the Second World War. There was fighting on the Albert Canal at the beginning and end of the war. And those trenches formed the lines behind. They are not trenches like you find on the Yser. But if you stop at the spot, you can definitely see the distortion of the landscape.

Hiking

During the war, the canal remained a line of defense, as evidenced by two crash sites of British bombers from 1940 and 1941 in the nearby Munsterbos, and the remains of trenches a little further away. Some trenches are quite deep and have raised ramparts on either side consisting of a breastwork and back wall. Others were dug less deeply because of the groundwater levels.
