About eighty years after they were constructed, traces of trenches from the Second World War can still be clearly seen about five hundred metres from the Albert Canal. The fact that there was fighting is certainly evident from the bomb craters that can be found a little further on in the forest. The Albert Canal was therefore very important as a means of transport during the Second World War. The trenches in Zutendaal came to light thanks to the provincial project ‘Onder de radar’. Using old military aerial photographs from both the Allies and the Germans, it is clear where exactly they were located. A laser scan of our province was recently made from an airplane. This information is used for major infrastructure works, but is also useful for archaeologists who want to map the Second World War.

At this spot you can still clearly see the trenches from the war. There is also a sign with an explanation. From a platform you can see them even better
