The Maria Hilf pilgrimage church on Amberg's Mariahilfberg is an impressive Baroque church. Construction began in 1694. It boasts an incredible interior with magnificent ceiling paintings.

The largest mountain pilgrimage in the Upper Palatinate was created during the plague in 1634. The tower of the former castle on the Ammenberg was converted into a chapel, and immediately afterwards the town built a round chapel based on the model of the chapel on the Lechfeld. The current pilgrimage church on the Mariahilfberg was built in 1697 to plans by Wolfgang Dientzenhofer in place of the previous church that burned down in 1646. Due to the War of the Spanish Succession, construction could not be completed until 1711.

The city Amberg was hit in 1634 by a heavy Pestepedemie. On the advice of Fr. Caspar Hell, Rector of the Jesuit College, the citizens, hoping that the plague subsided, promised to build a Marian chapel on the mountain. In September, the picture of Mary donated by P. Hell was transferred to the Mariahilfberg. A few months later, the plague subsided - the reputation of miraculous image spread rapidly. 1659-1694 recorded 162 prayer hearings.
The mountain monastery was cared for only during the pilgrimage in summer by the Franciscans from the city monastery. Even the secularization after 1803 did not affect the popularity of the pilgrimage. To this day, the pilgrimage on the Mariahilfberg has remained the largest Upper Palatinate Marian pilgrimage. Pilgrims from all over Upper Palatinate and Upper Franconia come to the patronal feast "Visitation of the Virgin Mary" on 2 July.
