Amberg was one of the first medium-sized cities to set up a pedestrian zone. The opening ceremony was on May 18, 1974. The car-free zone initially stretched from Hallplatz to Roßmark. Today it stretches from Malteserplatz through Georgnstrasse and across the market square to Bahnhofstrasse / corner of Ziegelgasse / Obere Nabburger Strasse. It is around 800 m long.
