Best Hikes to Wingershofer Gate

Tips

  • As with the Nabburg Gate, there are two versions of the Wingershof Gate. The first version was built as part of the castle in 1454 as a result of the "Amberg Uprising". A little more than 100 years passed. Then Elector Ludwig VI decided to rebuild the gate. The old gate was too integrated into the castle. The new version west of the government building was finally completed in 1580 in the Renaissance style.

  • According to written sources, the Wingershofer Gate, which is part of the Amberg city wall, dates from 1579. At that time, a new building was necessary because the old gate, located a little further to the east, belonged to the castle area after the castle was built. The Wingershofer Tor is a typical double gate system of this time: Outside a gate reinforced by a tower, then an area for the control of people and carts (gate kennel) and then the inner gate. quermania.de/bayern/amberg/wingershofer-tor.php
