Hardwood floodplains depend on periodic flooding. Since the natural floodplains on rivers have been reduced by 90 percent due to human intervention, the hardwood floodplain is a particularly protected habitat under the FFH Directive. It is characterized by pedunculate oak, elm and ash, as well as a herb and shrub layer.
The Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue area is home to the largest contiguous floodplain forests on the Upper Rhine.
Typical, endangered and therefore protected species of the hardwood floodplain include beetles such as the hermit beetle, stag beetle and great capricorn beetle.
