It looks a bit enchanted: Bettenburg Castle in a great location above Manau. Today it is touted as a “uniquely beautiful place for seminars and events” and is therefore only open to house guests.

The Rennweg, an ancient trade and military road, was guarded by the Bettenburg castle - first mentioned as early as 1231. The castle is considered a landmark of the Haßberge and was destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525, but rebuilt a short time later under the direction of Knight Balthasar Truchsess. The most famous lord of the castle was Christian von Truchsess (1755 – 1826). Under him, the well-known Bettenburger Round Table came into being – including the poet and writer Friedrich Rückert. Until 1940, the castle was the residence of the Truchsess family, who still own the castle today. Today the castle is used as a seminar and conference center.

Unfortunately, the Bettenburg in the area is signposted as a hiking destination and the hiking trail there is well maintained. If you get there, however, you will be yelled at in an unfriendly manner that it is private property and that you should disappear. Corresponding signs can only be seen when you drive into the parking lot. What a shame!
