Lieutenant Admiral Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen (1735-1819) was a famous naval hero. But for Apeldoorn he was above all a philanthropist. After a long career as an admiral on wild seas, Van Kinsbergen lived on his estate Welgelegen in Apeldoorn from 1798 until his death in 1819. During that time he did a lot of charity for the people of Apeldoorn. Among other things, he founded an orphanage for girls. On its twentieth anniversary, the Apeldoorn Monuments Foundation (SAM) took the initiative to have a statue designed in memory of Van Kinsbergen.
About the statue: A statue with two sides
Artist Erzsébet Baerveldt designed the statue based on drawings and texts about Van Kinsbergen. It shows the two sides of him: the admiral and the philanthropist. Van Kinsbergen rises from the waves. Objects from the admiralty such as cannonballs, and also his costume, are reminders of his famous past as a naval hero. The outstretched hands form an inviting gesture as a symbol of his generosity.
