    Natural treasure Besenhorster sand mountains

This scenic area on the outskirts of Geesthacht was created from glacial, to sand dunes raised sand deposits. Even today, the dunes are up to 20 meters high and overgrown with oak, pine and birch trees. In the immediate vicinity are the Elbsandwiesen, a sand-dried lawn with rare plant species. While walking, one also sees remnants of the Düneberg powder factory, which was there until the end of the Second World War. In the meantime nature has recaptured this area.

In the nature reserve there is a signposted road network. Round hiking trails are available.

For hikers and walkers is recommended on the one hand the trail parking lot on the outskirts Geesthacht (Am Schleusenkanal - behind the bridge B404 in the direction of Altengamme) or you start at Heuweg 65 in Geesthacht. Parking is available at the Heuweg. A small path (easily overlooked) leads between two houses to an underpass on the other side of the B 404; From here the paths in the nature reserve are signposted.

An overview of the trails can be found in the Natura2000 document, which can be downloaded here.

After the last ice age, sand deposited in the Elbe-Urstromtal valley was blown up into sand dunes by outflowing water, which today still has a thickness of up to 20 meters. With its open, sometimes also with loose oak, birch and pine overgrown dunes, which merge in the southern part in an open meadow landscape, the area is of great scenic appeal.

The inland dune area was originally much more extensive. In addition to a development of the edge areas (including the Geesthachter district "dune mountain") has also left an ammunition factory in the area their tracks. It was dismantled after World War II. In addition to building remains that can still be seen today, planting that leads to disruption of the typical dune ecosystems is evidence of former uses.

Since 1955, with the construction of the Geesthacht lock, the area has been deprived of the natural dynamics of a river valley. Since then, it is no longer exposed to the direct flood of the Elbe, so that, for example, hardly any open sites can develop naturally.

In order to secure the habitats of the rare and endangered species, care measures are carried out to prevent complete overgrowth of the open areas. By grazing or mowing and development of near-natural water level conditions, the communities of the sand meadows and flood troughs should be preserved.
