Along with the Cracauer Waterfall, a permanent low-water weir on the Alte Elbe River
near Magdeburg, it is the only barrage on the river in Germany.
The barrage consists of a weir with a fish ladder and a lock channel
with a double lock. Another fish ladder was completed in September 2010.
