A beach without a sea. The wind-sculpted sand dunes in the Besenhorster Sandberge and Elbe Sand Meadows Nature Reserve are up to 20 meters high and crisscross the landscape east of Geesthacht. Pines and birch trees take root in the sandy soil, and plants normally found only on the coast grow among them.

Besenhorst Sand Hills, a natural treasure
This scenic area on the outskirts of Geesthacht was formed from sand deposits blown up into dunes during the Ice Age. Even today, the dunes are up to 20 meters high and covered with oak, pine, and birch trees. In the immediate vicinity are the Elbe Sand Meadows, a dry sandy grassland with rare plant species. While walking, you can also see the remains of the Düneberg gunpowder factory, which was located there until the end of World War II. Nature has since reclaimed this area.

There is a signposted network of trails in the nature reserve. Circular hiking trails are also available.

For hikers and walkers, we recommend the hiking car park at the exit of Geesthacht (Am Schleusenkanal - behind the B404 bridge towards Altengamme) or starting at Heuweg 65 in Geesthacht. Parking is available along Heuweg. A small path (easy to miss) leads between two residential buildings to an underpass on the other side of the B 404; from here, the trails in the nature reserve are signposted.

An overview of the hiking trails can be found in the Natura 2000 document, which can be downloaded here.
