If you are in the area, you should not miss the opportunity to
cross the Elbe bridge and enjoy the fantastic views of the Elbe.
The road bridge, which was inaugurated in 1966, connects Schleswig-Holstein with Lower Saxony.
On the Schleswig-Holstein side, it consists of a 175-meter-long bridge over the lock canal, a 550-meter-long embankment and a 400-meter-long section that crosses the actual Elbe. On the Lower Saxony side, there is a 240-meter-long approach bridge.
The cycle/hiking paths run along both sides of the road bridge, but are very narrow. When cyclists and hikers meet, it gets tight. Mutual consideration is called for.
When big trucks speed past, the bridge vibrates, which can sometimes make photos blurry.😉 But that doesn't matter at all - the important thing is that you can easily cross the Elbe here.
From the Elbe Bridge you can easily take a detour to the Schleuseninsel (Elbe Island). I am always fascinated by the great sandy beaches and the wonderful natural landscape in the south-western part of the island.

The Geesthacht barrage, which was put into operation in 1960, is located southwest of the Schleswig-Holstein town of Geesthacht and dams the water of the Elbe at 4 m above sea level. NN. It thereby limits the tidal influence of the North Sea upstream; the weir defines the end of the Inner Elbe. In addition to the Cracauer waterfall, a permanent low-water weir on the Old Elbe near Magdeburg, it is the only barrage in the course of the river in Germany. [1] The barrage consists of a weir with a fish pass and a lock channel with a double lock. [2] Another fish pass was completed in September 2010.More: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staustufe_Geesthacht#:~:text=Das%20Stauwehr%20in%20Geesthacht%20ist,sehen%20622%2C1%20Kilometer%20stromaufw%C3%A4rts.
