The National College "Gheorghe Lazăr", originally a Jesuit college founded in 1692, is the second oldest educational institution in Sibiu and one of the most important high schools in the city. Between 1692 and 1849, classes were held in Latin. After the failed revolution, the Germanization policy of the imperial Austrian authorities led to the Latin language of instruction being replaced by German. In 1868, the Ministry of Public Education in Budapest issued a decree ordering the replacement of German with Hungarian. Romanian and German were also allowed to be used as auxiliary languages. In 1919, the "Gymnasium" was renamed "Lyceum" and the Hungarian language of instruction was replaced by Romanian. In the 1951/1952 school year, a German language course was added.
