The former Cistercian nunnery "Himmelspforte" is located on the south bank of the Schaalsee. It was renovated extensively and down to the last detail in 2003-2006. The artistically designed, Gothic ribbed vaults are particularly interesting from an architectural point of view.
The Cistercian nunnery was founded in 1246 by Countess Audacia and her son, who later became Count Gunzelin III. von Schwerin, founded. As a so-called “virgin monastery”, it served as a place of education and refuge for the daughters of the counts and vassals from the neighboring counties as well as for Lübeck patrician families. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1552. After that it was used as a granary, brewery and district court. Youth hostel, residential building, library and home parlor used.
In the years 2003 to 2006 the monastery, an important monument of the architectural and state history of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, was extensively and accurately renovated. The architects, builders and preservationists entrusted with the renovation succeeded in an outstanding way in bringing old building fabric and modern requirements into a convincing synthesis. The artistically designed Gothic ribbed vaults on the ground floor are particularly interesting from an architectural point of view. A permanent exhibition is set up in the cloister, which is directly related to the monastery and its history. Guided tours in the monastery and church are intended to familiarize visitors with the details of historical developments.

The beautiful town of Zarrentin is located in the heart of the unique Schaalsee region. The city's landmark is, among other things, the monastery, which was founded in 1246 as a Cistercian nunnery by Countess Audacia and her son. After the monastery was dissolved in 1552, it was used, among other things, as a granary, brewery, district court, residential building and library. Between 2003 and 2006, the Gothic east wing, which has been preserved to this day, was extensively renovated. In the cloister of the monastery there is a permanent exhibition for visitors, in which a direct connection to the monastery and its history is established. It is also worth visiting the numerous musical events, the monastery market “Art & Work” or the Christmas market.
