The Lake Boissow Nature Reserve and the southern part of Lake Neuenkirchen are located in the northwest of the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in the middle of the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve.
The nature reserve is part of the Schaalsee European Bird Sanctuary, designated in 1992. It covers approximately 86 hectares and includes parts of the town of Zarrentin am Schaalsee in the districts of Boissow, Techin, Neuhof, and Neuenkirchen.
