Birger Jarls Torg is the central square of Riddarholmen. It is named after Birger Jarl, who is said to have founded Stockholm in the 13th century to protect Sweden from attacks by foreign fleets.

His statue stands prominently in the middle of the square. Most of the former city palaces on this square are now government buildings.

The statue of Biger Jarls is a work by Fogelberg Bengt Erland (1854).

On Riddarholmen, the bronze statue of Bengt Erland Fogelberg stands above the man considered the founder of Stockholm. Birger Jarl had taken control of Sweden at the time and his sons would be crowned kings. It is in an exchange of letters between Birger and his son Valdemar that Stockholm is first mentioned, in the year 1252. This is therefore counted as the year of the city's birth.

The statue was restored in 2005.
