Sculpture "The Sun Boat" on Riddarholmen by Christian Berg (1966)
July 23, 2024
Christian Berg is said to have gotten the idea for this image from a seashell he found while walking around an island in the Aegean Sea. But the image contains other references: Berg compared it to a boat with full sail, its surface reflecting the sun and the sky. He gave lightness to the originally 16-ton block of granite from which the statue was carved.

Christian Berg was a great proponent of abstract sculpture in Sweden. It is believed that the idea for this work came from a seashell he collected while walking on an island in the Aegean, but he was also inspired by boats and sails. In fact, from some angles the sculpture resembles a ship's sail to me.
