Founded in 1854, the Henrichshütte was one of the Ruhr region's most traditional ironworks. Up to 10,000 workers produced iron and steel here. Despite fierce opposition from the entire region, blast furnace 3, the oldest in the Ruhr, was shut down in 1987. Today, the LWL Museum Henrichshütte attracts thousands of visitors, and the city is proud to offer the Henrichshütte as one of the key sites on the "Route of Industrial Heritage."

The site is explored via circular walking tours, which follow the "Iron Trail" through ore and coal bunkers, past the engine house and hot blast stoves, up to blast furnace 3, and back down into the casting hall.
