The Hattingen lock lies on the Birschel mill; the Birschel mill was a grain mill on the Ruhr in Hattingen. It was created in 1880 by the Birschel family on the Kliff property. Today there is a service complex and a restaurant.
The associated hydropower plant has been reactivated in recent years. The on-site water turbine was renewed as part of the renovation work and feeds green electricity into the power grid.
The Hattinger Ruhr lock next to the mill was built in 1774, rebuilt in 1819/20 and is still operational today when the Ruhr does not have low water. In 1989 the wooden gates were renewed.
