On the old towpath, the ships were pulled up by horses against the current Ruhr.
May 29, 2016
A particularly idyllic part of the Ruhr Valley, the old towpath is well preserved and invites you to take a walk along the Ruhr. Before motorisation, the towpath was used to pull ships up the river using horses. The so-called Ruhraaken were mainly used here, which were used to transport coal. The flow of the water extended downstream.

"A towpath or towpath is a pathway that runs right on the banks of rivers or canals, designed to allow people and draft animals (horses, for example) to pull wooden freighters upriver - the process was called trekking going treidel horses and treidlers connected with the ships.
