The building was intended as a liberal, "Gothic" reconstruction of the house of the same name, which was built in 1558 against the old castle in Antwerp and destroyed by fire in 1856. The inscription that runs across the entire facade refers to that year, 1558.
The building is currently undergoing extensive restoration.
