The tunnels probably go much further, some branches are walled up.
They were built to offer patients and staff protection from artillery fire, bomb fragments and other war effects. In times of intense fighting, people could retreat into these trenches. The trenches were strategically placed so that they were easily accessible and could be reached quickly from nearby buildings.
