The Beelitz Heilstätten's lounges were an essential part of the sanatorium concept, which was based on fresh air and sufficient rest. These covered, open halls allowed patients to recover in the fresh air without being directly exposed to the elements.- Therapeutic purpose: Fresh air was considered crucial for the healing of tuberculosis and other lung diseases. Patients spent many hours a day in the lounges, often in special lounge chairs.
- Architectural design: The halls were designed to offer protection from wind and rain, but at the same time allow sufficient light and air circulation.
- Social aspects: The lounges also served as social meeting places where patients could exchange ideas and spend time together.
