A very beautiful castle with everything that goes with it. The castle also has a wedding hall (registry office), a restaurant, and a museum. Furthermore, one of the buildings officially houses the world's largest nail.
Stolberg Castle (German: Burg Stolberg) is one of the most impressive and distinctive historical sights in the North Eifel region, towering over the winding streets of Stolberg's old town (Rhineland). The castle is not only a striking sight from a distance but also a place where history, culture, and modern experience converge.
The origins of Stolberg Castle date back to the 12th century, when a first fortified castle was built on the rocky plateau above the Vichtbach Valley. This original castle was destroyed in 1375, after which a new late-medieval fortress was constructed between 1445 and 1450. Over the centuries, the complex has been adapted, expanded, and altered several times, resulting in a fascinating mix of medieval, Renaissance, and historicist architectural styles.
By the end of the 19th century, the castle was largely dilapidated until local industrialist Moritz Kraus had it restored between 1888 and 1909 in the spirit of the Burgenrenaissance, a popular romantic reconstruction style of the time. Kraus donated the castle to the town of Stolberg in 1909 as a permanent heritage. After suffering damage during World War II, it was rebuilt again from the 1950s onward, with the aim of restoring the building's character in the style of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Its location on a rugged rocky promontory overlooking the town makes Stolberg Castle a typical Höhenburg (hill castle). The walls and towers seem to grow almost out of the rock, which, together with the view, creates an impressive atmosphere. The complex includes:
• a spacious knight's hall used for concerts and events;
• a castle tower and tower gates that mark the entrance and provide defense;
• a castle garden and herb garden where typical local plants grow, and art and historical exhibitions in the gallery spaces.
Today, Stolberg Castle functions primarily as a museum and cultural center. The Torburg houses a museum of local history, crafts, and industry, with collections covering glass, copper, and brass working, among other important aspects of Stolberg's economic history. Information panels, interactive media, and even an augmented reality app help visitors understand the rich architectural history and life at the castle through the centuries.
