After the Lutherans had gradually established themselves in Aachen from the middle of the 16th century, many families joined this new religion, including the Schleicher family from Aachen. For this they were harassed and disadvantaged and migrated to Stolberg. Here the copper master family, who became increasingly wealthy, built the first stone house in Stolberg in 1575. To date, all other houses were made of wood.

In the early 1570s, Leonard Schleicher from Aachen was the first copper master to recognize the location advantages in the Stolberger Valley that were important for the brass trade (including hydropower and nearby ore and hard coal deposits) and moved his business from Aachen to Stolberg. Here he built the first copper farm on today's Burgstrasse and with it the first stone residential building in Stolberg.

Since this and the later copper yards had to be built "on greenfield sites", the only construction types that were initially considered were closed, defensible courtyards whose buildings were grouped around an inner courtyard and, from the outside, conveyed an uninviting but rather defensive impression.

The current appearance of the former copper farm was only achieved through later renovations and in particular through the associated structure of the facade with window and door openings that were framed with the light bluestone typical of the landscape.
