The Rüttenscheid Market Fountain is located on the southwest corner of the Rüttenscheid Market Square; in the center of the fountain sits "The Market Woman under the Umbrella" on a column. This statue was created from bronze by the sculptor Adolf Wamper from Essen in 1955 (signed "WAMPER 1955"). According to Joachim Petsch (1 994), it is a "high-quality work of art in public space, typical of the time, which represents a market idyll." (S.: Petsch, J.: Bestand Qualitätsvoller Bauen aus den "Fünfziger" (Inventory of high-quality buildings from the "fifties").

The sculptor Adolf Wamper (*1901, t1977) was the lecturer for the sculpture group at the Folkwang School of Design for 22 years until 1970 and was appointed professor in 1970. In the middle of the circular, knee-high, flat fountain basin stands a 190 cm high stone column made of shell limestone. The life-size market woman with a foot-length dress and cap crouches under a wide umbrella; next to her are six basket-like vessels filled with round fruit. She holds one fruit in her raised right hand. On the back on In one of the baskets stands a crowing rooster - this is the wake-up call to one of the largest weekly markets in the region, which takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays; otherwise the square in the middle is a PARKING LOT

🛍️ The Market Woman Under an Umbrella at the Rüttenscheid Market in Essen is more than just a fountain statue – it's a charming symbol of the vibrant hustle and bustle of the neighborhood.

Designed by the sculptor Adolf Wamper, it depicts a scene steeped in tradition: A market woman sits under an umbrella, protected from sun and rain, evoking the long history of market activity in Rüttenscheid. The fountain stands where the "Flora Fountain" once stood – a symbol of the market rights that Rüttenscheid received when it was incorporated into Essen in 1906.

A real eye-catcher that is often overlooked – but worth a closer look! Ideal as a starting point for a stroll along the "Rü" or a visit to the weekly market.
