The fountain, created by Professor Enseling, was inaugurated on July 20, 1912. It was erected by the city of Essen in gratitude for the founding of Margarethenhöhe in the Kleiner Markt (Small Market).
The fountain bears the inscription:
"Do not dig treasures with spades, seek them in noble deeds."
