From the Maxstraße the Wandse was channeled between 1854 and 1900 and is therefore called Eilbekkanal. From the turning basin (Löschplatz Lortzingstraße) east of the Von-Essen-Straße in the district Barmbek there was nearly 50 years long, from 1890 to 1939 a regular service with Alsterdampfern. Another dock of the ships existed on the Richardstraße.
As of 2009, ten moorings for houseboats were set up on the northern shore of the Eilbek Canal as part of the "Living on the Water" pilot project. Five berths are located in the section between Wagner and Richardstraße (Barmbek-South) and five more in the section between Finkenau and Lerchenfeld (Uhlenhorst). The houseboats are secured to dolphins and have on the shore connection to the sewer, power and garbage disposal. The houseboats are standardized in the base area and have a width of 6 meters, so as not to obstruct the shipping traffic, sometimes 10 meters in length. To make them fit under the bridges, they have a maximum height of 3.25 meters above the water level. The upper floor may occupy only half of the basement floor to allow the pedestrians the view of the Eilbekkanal. The living area is 130 to 160 square meters. For the berth rent is paid. The boats are used as offices or as apartments.

Parallel to the Eilbek Canal, the bicycle lane in Uferstraße and Lortzingstraße has been running since 2012 as part of the Veloroute 6, which leads from the city via Dulsberg to Farmsen.

Hard to believe that this idyll can be found in the midst of the busy city. The Wandse was canalized over a length of around 4km between 1854 and 1900 and is therefore called the Eilbek Canal.
There is a lot to discover on the banks of the area, which is essentially designed as a bicycle and pedestrian zone. Banks invite you to linger and since 2009 the pilot project "Living on the water" has been running with great houseboats on the water.
