Cycling
was the largest tunnel boring machine in the world at the time, with an outer diameter of 14.20 meters. For the expansion of the new Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg, a 2,560-meter-long fourth tunnel was bored beneath the Elbe Riverbed between October 1997 and March 2000 using the shield boring method. The tunnel boring machine, weighing over 2,000 tons, removed approximately 400,000 cubic meters of sand, gravel, and rock at an average speed of 6 meters per day.
