In August 1822, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the market town of Redwitz. He had met the manufacturer Wolfgang Caspar Fikentscher in Eger and was invited by him to visit his chemical factory. Goethe was particularly fascinated by glass production. During his stay, he stayed with Fikentscher in the house that is now the new town hall of Marktredwitz.

In 1794, Wolfgang Caspar Fikentscher, founder of the Chemical Factory (CFM) and mayor of Redwitz, had the building constructed as a classicist residential building on Egerstrasse outside the ring wall and opposite the CFM. The design was by the Wunsiedel master builder Carl Johann Ritter. In 1930, the building was purchased by the city. Since then, it has served as the seat of the city administration.
