After more than five years of construction, the Emschergenossenschaft has completed the natural redesign of the Resser and Backumer Bach. At the same time, the new cycle path along the two waterways was completed and opened to the public. After the wastewater clearance, the Emschergenossenschaft has thus taken another important step towards nature and flood protection in Herten.A natural stream meanders in small and large curves, is sometimes wider, sometimes narrower, flows quickly, then calms down again and slowly babbles along. Instead of following a natural course of the water, the Resser and Backumer Bach flowed straight through Herten like a black line for decades. Concrete soles formed their beds and ensured that the water and its stinking cargo were transported as quickly as possible towards the Holzbach and from there into the Emscher. These former sewage basins are now history - since November 2021 the two streams have been free of wastewater and with the renaturation now completed, nature on and in the water can develop freely again.
