No matter how much romance we ascribe to this evergreen plant, the mistletoe's way of life is far from idyllic. Just as we steal a kiss under a bunch of mistletoe, the plant itself steals water and nutrients from its host. It parasitizes, among other things, apple trees and Canadian poplars, without which it cannot survive. The trees themselves receive nothing in return from their uninvited guest! Mistletoe does take care of photosynthesis itself, which is why it is officially classified as a 'semi-parasite'.

Mistletoe appears in the landscape, especially on calcareous soils. That makes it a relatively rare plant in our country, although it is ubiquitous in Haspengouw.

The reason why mistletoe has difficulty gaining a foothold in other places is that most berries do not carry seeds. The plant depends on flies for pollination. Only when a female and a male plant grow close to each other is there a chance of pollination. When a fertilized seed ends up further away, the resulting plant is usually too lonely to reproduce.

The mistletoe (Viscum album) is an evergreen plant from the sandalwood family (Santalaceae). The plant lives on trees. It is a semi-parasite. The mistletoe is also called birdlime or mistel, or referred to by the English name mistletoe.
