The knight Roland stands on the Cheb market square, powerful and self-confident like an invincible guardian of the city. The large fountain at his feet and the huge lance in his hand impressively emphasize his powerful figure. The statue commemorates a glorious era, a time when emperors and kings were guests in the city. The citizens of Cheb gave him the name “Wastl” lovingly and disrespectfully at the same time. Eger was made a city in 1179, received Nuremberg city rights in 1212 and became a free imperial city in 1277. The Roland Fountain was built in 1528 and initially only had a painted wooden figure, which was replaced by the stone sculpture in 1591.
