In 1911 Maurice Maeterlinck was the only Belgian ever to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Ghent, his hometown, played an important role in his career, according to the book that was published a year before his death.
The well-known fairy tale by Maurice Maeterlinck “L'oiseau bleu” is about the search for happiness embodied by a blue bird. This was the inspiration for the artwork “Les oiseaux de Mr. Maeterlinck” or Blue Birds from the French Pitaya on the Ajuinbrug. For this, luminous blue birds were hung in a tree by the water.
The light artwork Maeterlinck was one of the highlights of the Ghent Light Festival 2012. Simple blue birds in clean lines like origami landed silently and with a minimum of energy consumption on the branches of the tree on the Predikherenlei. These illuminated birds provide a double night image due to their reflection in the water. In the meantime, the City of Ghent has purchased the light artwork and you can admire the work all year round.
