Church with roots in the 11th century
The spire of St. Michael's Church should have stood tall above all the others, but history has decided otherwise: the planned 134-metre-high 'monument of triumph' has remained at a paltry 24 metres. In 1828 the unfinished tower was finally given a flat roof.
The church contains numerous paintings and sculptures by well-known masters, including 'Christ on the cross' by Antoon Van Dyck.

This church is dedicated to Archangel Michael, the name (from the Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - in paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword or lance. Along with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel, Michael is one of the four Archangels who (according to human conception) hold the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is September 29th.
