After his death, a committee led by Camille De Bast and Victor Carpentier took the initiative to erect a monument to Mechelynck, with the support of the city council. The statue, made by Hippolyte Leroy, was erected in 1925 on Sint-Annaplein.
During the Second World War, the bronze bust of Mechelynck was removed by pro-German Gentenaars and dumped in the Scheldt. After the war it was fished out, refurbished and placed back on its pedestal.
