Albert Josse Louis Mechelynck (Ghent, 28 December 1854 – 9 March 1924) was a Belgian Liberal politician. He was a lawyer, provincial councilor, member of parliament and chairman of the Liberal Party.

After his death, a committee led by Camille De Bast and Victor Carpentier took the initiative to erect a monument to Mechelynck, with the support of the city council. The statue, made by Hippolyte Leroy, was erected in 1925 on Sint-Annaplein.

During the Second World War, the bronze bust of Mechelynck was removed by pro-German Gentenaars and dumped in the Scheldt. After the war it was fished out, refurbished and placed back on its pedestal.

Albert Mechelynck (1854-1924) was a Belgian liberal politician. He was a lawyer, provincial councillor, member of parliament and (from 1914 until his death) chairman of the Liberal Party.
From 1919 to 1924 he was vice-chairman of the Chamber.
The day before his death, Mechelynck was appointed Minister of State, a rare honour for a member of parliament who had not borne ministerial responsibility.
He is buried in the Westerbegraafplaats, one of the two monumental cemeteries in the city.

Albert Josse Louis Mechelynck (Ghent, 28 December 1854 – Ghent, 9 March 1924) was a Belgian liberal politician and lawyer, who played an important role in the municipal politics of Ghent and became known for his philanthropic work and his commitment to the city.

        Biography and career

Mechelynck was born into a wealthy Ghent family and studied law at the university. After graduating, he started a career as a lawyer, in which he profiled himself as a brilliant jurist and an advocate of liberal values. His interest in social affairs soon led him to politics.

In the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Mechelynck was a prominent figure within the Liberal Party in Ghent. He held various political positions, notably as a municipal councilor and alderman of the city. Mechelynck was committed to education, culture, and urban development, and worked on various projects that were intended to promote the prosperity of Ghent.

        Contributions to Ghent

Mechelynck was remembered above all for his love for the city of Ghent and his tireless efforts to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. He was a great supporter of public works and infrastructure improvements. He was also involved in various cultural initiatives and had a strong interest in preserving the city's heritage.

He was also a great philanthropist, donating considerable amounts of his own wealth to charities and social projects. One of his most famous contributions was the donation of his house and a large part of his fortune to the city of Ghent, with the aim of supporting educational and social projects.

        Tribute

After his death, Albert Mechelynck was honoured with the naming of the Albert Mechelynckstraat in Ghent. His legacy lives on in the projects and institutions he supported, and he is remembered as one of the leading liberal figures of his time in Ghent.

His life's work reflects a strong commitment to both liberal ideals and social progress, and his role in promoting urban and cultural development remains an important chapter in Ghent's history.
