St. Bavo's Cathedral, the oldest parish church in Ghent's city center, stands on the site of a church in the 10th century, and a Romanesque church from the 12th century onward. This church was dedicated to John the Baptist. Ghent was a rich and powerful city during the Middle Ages, and could increasingly afford to build larger and more impressive churches. Therefore, St. John's Church was converted into the Gothic St. Bavo's Cathedral during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Transmarus, Bishop of Tournai and Noyon, is said to have dedicated a small church to Saint John the Baptist on this site in 942. This was followed by a Romanesque church in the mid-12th century, traces of which can still be found in the crypt, decorated with murals.
In 1536, the centuries-old Abbey of Saint Bavo was dissolved by order of Emperor Charles V. Most of the abbey was demolished after the Ghent Revolt in 1540 and converted into barracks. The abbot and monks of this abbey were secularized and given the title of canon. Their chapter transferred to Saint John's Church, which from then on was called Saint Bavo's Church.
Admire the Ghent Altarpiece and other art treasures in Saint Bavo's Cathedral.
